Constructionskills Update
Monday, September 29th, 2008Just a quick up-date on Rhydian. From Tuesday to Friday of this week he will be taking part in the British heat of the Skillbuild competition to be held in Leeds. We wish him all the best & will let you know how he gets on.
Rhydian got on really well in the competion . He had to make a ledge & brace door. Apparently he was in the top 6 students. It was a great experience for him & he did himself proud.
These spalted beech tables are unique made from timber felled locally over twelve years ago and left to dry naturally. The spalt is caused by a fungus, as the timber dries out the spores are killed off and leave the patterned black stripes in the timber. Our craftsmen have accentuated the natural beauty of this wood by hand sanding and applying 5 coats of oil and a further coat of Fiddes Wax. After each application the surface is cut back achieving the glasslike finish. The legs are haunched, mortice and tennoned complimenting the rustic charm of the timber really alowing the beauty of this wood to be appreciated.
